Dr. Mark Travers

Mark has over 37 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical and device industry. Prior to joining Merck in 2015, he held positions of increasing responsibility at the country, regional and global level focusing on both people management and clinical trial operations at Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson and Yamanouchi (now Astellas) and industry initiatives such as risk based monitoring (RBM) with Transcelerate BioPharma.
Starting his Pharmaceutical Industry career as a CRA in the UK, Mark has a strong affinity for CRAs and the work they do at investigational sites. He has championed the CRA role throughout his career and valorized this core competency at all previous companies.
Under his recent 10 year Leadership at Merck, Mark introduced a new, global regional operating model designed to align regional structures and job roles worldwide, helping to ensure the success of our company’s complex and growing pipeline. Mark had a profound impact on rebuilding our monitoring capabilities. He led Monitoring Excellence from its inception to its current industry-leading status. During Mark’s tenure, his commitment and strategic vision were essential in leveraging GCTO’s global footprint to reach more diverse populations, provide access to treatments across all our therapeutic areas and speed the path to get much-needed medicines to patients around the world including 41 indications for Keytruda.
As he starts this new chapter in an advisor role, Mark has developed a strong interest, and engagement with a number of high tech companies and increased his knowledge/understanding around regenerative and agentic AI and the role it plays in selecting countries, investigational sites and identify patients suitable for clinical trial participation.
Mark has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland as well as a doctorate in Bioengineering from the University of Strathclyde. He has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom. Before moving into industry, Mark completed a two-year post-doctorate program in the Department of Medicine, Glasgow Royal infirmary. Mark currently lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
